34Appendix: How to Recognize a True Specialist

This checklist is what some readers opened the book for. It’s drawn from everything the book covers. Use it yourself and pass it on — in full, unaltered.

A true professional:

They don’t promise miracles. They don’t say “I’ll cure you in three sessions” — they say “let’s give it a try and see where we are in a month.”

They’re honest about the side effects and limitations of their method, rather than advertising only the upside.

They hold a state-issued diploma — verifiable, confirmable through their country’s registry. Not a “certificate” from a weekend “school-university-academy.”

They don’t talk about “ancestral karma,” “negative energy,” “past lives,” “cleansings,” or “programs.” In any context. One such word in a session is grounds enough to walk out.

They work within recognized methods — cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure and response prevention, psychodynamic therapy, systemic family therapy, EMDR, DBT. Their approach is part of a larger scientific tradition, not a “proprietary methodology” built from scratch.

They cite international clinical guidelines, not just their own experience: “according to APA, NICE, and WHO recommendations, your disorder calls for such-and-such.”

They don’t hold you hostage through fear. If you decide to try another specialist or take a break, they respect that.

They charge per session or for a small block of sessions — no months-long prepayments, and you can stop at any time.

They keep the relationship professional. No romance, no friendship, no business arrangements beyond paying for the session.

And above all — they treat you as a partner in the work, not as someone in need of a revelation that only they possess.

If you’ve found someone like this, consider yourself lucky. Work with them. If you didn’t find one on the first try, keep looking: a second or third attempt is normal — the specialist has to be the right fit for you personally.

Red flags — short list:

The causes of your symptoms are sought in your ancestors’ lives or in your “past lives.”

You’re promised a cure for a diagnosed illness through energy, intention, or faith — and advised to “let go” of your medications.

The method is structured in tiers, each more expensive than the last, with full knowledge revealed only to the “advanced.”

You were diagnosed within the first ten minutes — and it happens to match the one condition this person treats.

When you ask to see their diploma, professional association membership, or data on the method’s effectiveness, they take offense or change the subject.

Improvement is credited to the method, while worsening is blamed on you: “resistance,” “not enough belief,” “you didn’t do the work.”

You found this specialist through your feed; they have hundreds of thousands of followers and not a single scientific publication.

Any single item on this list is reason to be wary. Any two are reason to leave. Your life is not their business model.
