27SECTION 6. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
Q: How long does it take to get rid of guilt?
A: It isn’t a linear process. You’ll notice the first shifts after four to six weeks of practice. Deeper change takes six to twelve months.
Q: Can I work through this book without a therapist?
A: Yes, for mild to moderate cases. If you’re dealing with severe depression, suicidal thoughts, or trauma, please reach out to a professional.
Q: What should I do if the guilt comes back after therapy?
A: That’s normal. Go back to the practices in Chapters 13 and 16. If they don’t help, schedule a booster session.
Q: How do I tell the difference between guilt and responsibility?
A: Guilt says, “I’m bad.” Responsibility says, “I can fix this.” Guilt paralyzes you. Responsibility motivates you.
Q: Can I forgive myself if I’ve hurt someone else?
A: Yes. Forgiving yourself doesn’t mean denying the harm. It means acknowledging it, making amends, and committing not to do it again.
Q: What should I do if my partner/parent uses guilt against me?
A: Set boundaries. Use the technique from Chapter 6. If you need to, see a couples or family therapist.
